BOM for variants

We are trying to use variants. The same materials is shipped in different kind of packing. eaching packing has got its own BOM. if i want to use the packing spec as variant can i have different bill of mateiral for each variant.

You create BOM for a item and the variant can represent the version Code. Now here are two approaches that customers take.
You can create requisition lines for production order and change the version code equal to variant, and run refresh planning line. You have to make some minor changes on requisition line to pickup the right version automatically. Aferwards run carry out msg and you have a production order for that variant with it's own component. This one is all manual process.

The second option which requires a lot of modification is to change MRP+MPS routine to pick the correct production version based on variant. As well as creates requisition for the components that are needed. You have to make some minor changes on requisition line to pickup the right version as well.
