How to run two instances of Nav (Client Only Mode)

BurneBurne Member Posts: 12
As fortune would have it, I need to work with two instances of the Navision client simultaneously, connecting to two local databases (client-only mode) -- I need to merge some objects and tinker with stuff.

When I try to open the second .FDB with a new instance of the Navision client, I get the following error:

"
Microsoft Business Solutions-Navision
This function cannot be executed while the database is being used by other users.
OK
"

Is there a way to run two instances of the Navision client in Client Only mode, connected to two local databases? - for development purposes only, of course.

SOLUTION:
1) Copy the Navision folder, typically, "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Business Solutions-Navision\Client" to a new location, say "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Business Solutions-Navision\Client1".

2) Now we can open two .FDB's by running one instance of fin.exe from each location.

Thanks,
Paul.

Assuming that you are trying to open 2 different FDB files, try copying Navision folder into a separate "Client2" folder, then run the second copy from there.

    It works!
Now why didn't I think of that? Thank you so much.

I'm actually quite surprised it works. Installing Navision does not write a bunch of things in the registry? Most programs do and therefore copying installed applications tend to have problems.

I am amazed at how well that works as well. It is really nice though, it enables you to have 10 different versions running on one computer. The only time you get into trouble is when you need to work with different versions of external components.

Actually you can run navision without installing it. Just copy the folder across to the c drive. I suggest this for clients who do not want to install anything on the server, but It's nice to have Navision on server so that you can run certain batches that take long. For example for go live whenyou have to post thousands of initial entries. On server it posts a lot faster.
