Database Size

Navi_LearnerNavi_Learner Member Posts: 356
Hi expert. Recently I noticed our database is increasing a lot. Before that the size is 18%, but it is increased to 46% within several months. Will the new sales order increase the size of the database? How to prevent it and what method ? Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
Additional information about database size is necessary. If your database was 200MB then it is more then normal, but if your database was 80GB then it is another situation.
How big is your database, how many users, how many transactions?

Thank you for your response! We are using Navision 4.0 with 18 users. The size of the databse is just 2,457,600(very small) and 46% of it has been used. We have done some modifications. We have created 4 new tables and add some new fields to some existing tables. Regarding your answers, I have some questions: 1. database sql/c-side. Where do I find the information? 2. Transactions. What actually does it mean? 3. What processes are running? What does it mean? I really appreciate your help and thanks in advance!

If your database is all of a sudden growing more quickly, I bet some of those new fields are flowfields.

Sometimes an user activated the Change Log System in Navision just to test the functionality or your NSC activate the Change Log to provide Data Loss.
Check out the Change Log setup....

Thank you, expert. We didn't create any flowflieds. We don't have right to access the Change Log setup, so we can't activate the Change in Navision. Can any expert tell me what to do with the system. Is our database size too small? Thanks in advance!

To find out if you are running on SQL you can investigate the shortcut you use to startup navision. If it is fin.exe it's c/side if it is finsql.exe it's SQL.

If you are running SQL your instalation might not be done correctly.

How many sales/purchases documents you have average per day?
I think you have nothing to wory about 1GB for 18 users, if you have a lot of sales/purchases documents is OK. You can try to optimize database to free some space. Or you can use File->databse->Information->Tables to have overview of space usage.

Your database will fill up too if you create 3 GB of database size but only have 200 MB of data. Navision will find ways to chew it up.

Also, it depends on the time of the day you view the database information. During peak hours, your database usage will seem larger than normal since it uses the extra space for buffering.

Check your database information again when everyone is off Navision to get a better sense of your "true" database usage.
