Dear Anthony,
Navision manufacturing planning engine is a means that used to generate a production and material plan. You use planning worksheet for it. The planning here could be as same as what the PPIC (production planning and inventory control) always do. They maybe do create master production schedule, maybe create material requirement planning, all they do relates to sales order. So, planning engine works beginfrom sales order, except if there is forecasting and the system set up to it, the sales order will not be used.
things that influence the planning engine are open purchase order and sales order, forecasts, CRM, inventory, BOM and WIP. In planning worksheet, you can calculate MRP/MPS or MPS then MRP. Usually the results are in the field of action message consists of :
new, change qty, reschedule, reschedule and change qty and cancel.
Then system will ask you to do create production order, purchase order or transfer order.
