looking for less expensive solution

Hello,

One of our clients would like to have his 40 inspectors to access Navision's production orders to print labels and to post finished goods inventory. The workflow is like these:

1) A roll of goods is inspected;
2) The inspector will access the production order and print a label and affix it to the roll;
3) If everything is OK, he can then click an OK button to update finished goods inventory.

These 40 inspectors will not do anything else in Navision. They will be on all the time, and print a label every 10 minutes. They can not leave their inspection machines.

The easiest solution is to ask him to purchase 40 more additional Navision sessions, 40 more computers and label printers. But it is very expensive. Does anyone have better (less expensive, but workable) solutions?

Thanks.

Scott

    pda's connecting through 802.11b to a central computer running Navision. Regarding the label printers, not enough info.

    Try using the Navision User Portal. Granted you'll need to purchase the Navision Application Server...probably less than $8000 US...and do some development work to create the exact user interface. However, the big saving will come in the sessions arena. With User Portal, you'll only need to purchase 40 web users that are about 1/2 the cost of a standard user.

    The job description that you have outlined is exactly what User Portal was developed for...namely a Navision user that is not really a power user and only wants to perform the same function over and over.

    An alternative to user portal is to develop a simple application in any of the popular languages to connect to Navision. This scenario would bypass the need for 40 seats as the connection is on demand and not perpetual. All that would be absoutely neccessary would be the purchase of either the C/ODBC or CFront drivers (less than $1000) each. This would also maximize your profit as you will be billing for the development of the app.
