Using Responsibility Centres

Can i Use responsibility centres for cost center or profit center accounting.I want a separate Trial balance,balance sheet location wise
if not then why are they given in the system

I think you can use it as a profit center by using analysis by dimension feature. you can set it in the responsibility card on general tab in field department code after make written it in dimension value, if the accounting itselfs will be treated like department.
