Employee Portal Web Part connections

Hello,
I need to filter the the view of the Document Library in SharePoint based on a parameter from a value in the Header-Line Employee Portal web part.
Can I create a web part connection from a non-Employee Portal web part that will consume values from the Employee Portal webpart?
Or visa-versa, could the EP web part provide a value to the DocLib web part which I could then use in the filter?
Your help with this would be so very much appreciated!
