Setting options on Client vs. setting options on Service

Hi
Some time ago I've seen an interesting thread concerning the mentioned topic. Unfortunately I can't find it anymore. :?
Anyway, it's about the following:
On native client you can set commit cache, dbms cache, object cache. What is the difference on setting these options if connecting directly to the db OR connecting through a db service?
My opinion: If connecting through a service, the clients settings do not take effect. Is this correct?
