Where did it go? Automation is gone :-(

What in world happend to the datatype Automation?

We have just upgraded from 3.70 to 4.0 SP2. We were about to create a new report with export to Excel and to our big surprise the Automation datatype is nowhere to be found in the variable subtype dropdown. According to the Navision C/SIDE help it should be there.

Does anybody know what is going on?

Best regards,
Ole

    Thanks Harry :D

Yes, the old stuff with automation still works.

We just can't create new variables of that type, neither by choosing from the drop down or typing directly in the subtype field.

My colleagues and I are a bit confused about how this could be a license issue. Do you or anybody else have more details on this?

    Best regards,
    Ole

I'm not sure just seems logical with your switch.

But in the meantime I guess you could create the report in 3.7 & export /Import the fob into the new system. Not the best solution but at least your not stuck for the time being.

    Hi again Harry,

I am sorry, but I don't understand why this seems logical after an upgrade. I have never ever heard anything about variable subtypes being dependent on licence. Can you cast a bit more light on the issue.

It's a well known fact that your license determines whether you can create automation type variables [-( . What I haven't heard before though is that you can do this in one version but not in another.

You could try keeping a copy of your 3.7 executable, and create the variables in a dummy database using that 3.7. Then you can export the objects and import them into your 4.0 system. Things you can't do is create XMLPorts and Menusuites, since those are not object types in 3.7, and certain code statements are not available in 3.7

It is a well known fact that new versions of Navision take away things you had access to in prior versions and now require a new granule to be licensed.

You can argue with Microsoft and sometimes they will give you the license. :D
    And sometimes not

    That granule hasn't been changed.

Check if you still have following granule in your license:
    1750: C/OCX

...yeah I read that back and saw the unintended condescending tone. Sorry about that, I was using my inner dorky sense of humor sarcastic voice when I wrote that.

I enjoy sarcasm too but it's so hard read

So when reading "It's a well known fact" makes me think: If it was well known to me I wouldn't be asking in the first place. :)

This is definitive an licence problem. Check your license.

I only got this issue once, and it was indeed a license problem.

Did you already check if you still have following granule in your license:
    1750: C/OCX

I agree you need that granule, but that wouldn't explain why they had access before and now they don't though.

I've found the answer. It's a funny "feature" in the Change License functionality.

At the time of the incident we had loaded an older version of our license for test purposes. This license doesn't include the OCX granule. We then changed the license to our current license which does have the granule. However, the Automation datatype was not to be found.

The solution is to close the Navision client, reopen and load the license with the OCX granule. This scenario can be reproduced over and over, so it's indeed a "feature". :)

    Happy Hollidays,

When you upgrade, you have to have an upgraded license, no? May be Microsoft messed it up? :|
