BOM item 'alias'

TeleTele Member Posts: 2
We are currently evaluating navision. :)

We have BOM's with all kinds of electronic components. These components often have different manufacturers ánd typenumbers, but are electronically equal.

So the BOM can contain components wich have their own 'aliases', selected on current price and availability.

Is this possible with a standard Navision implementation?

BOM item is a simple table to collect components of an item.
IF you are in the electronic assembly company, you have to create all of the components of an electronic product and to differentiate it, there is a manufacturer code field in the item card. You can use it. Or if it influences your accounting, you can use item category code.
So, the different among the items are manufacturer code, item category code and item no.

    Hi,
I used to work for a partner that dealt with customers in the military and electronic industry. I know what you mean, and yes, Navision standard can do that. What is usually used is Item Substitution (Found on the Item Card). If you produce an item that requires part X but X is out of stock, the system would then suggest that Y is available and is interchangeable with X. You can then select to use Y instead. This process is done manually by the planner.
To my knowledge, standard cannot do this interchanging manually, for this you might need to do some customization. It becomes complicated if you have rules when to interchange and when not. To automate this you need to write rules engine.
In short, the basic ability is there.

If I understood you correctly, you are looking to use Navision. Maybe my opinion – Based on my 3 years experience in the military & aviation industry with Navision -> great product, but keep it simple!!!!

    Hope this helped.

You can use item substitution if you have item that can be substituted with another item whose properties may be as same as primary item because of the primary item is not available in inventory, but you must still fill manufacturer code or item category. To utilise it, you can put in directly in the BOM item, but there is no indicator in the BOM item that it is a substitute. you need a modification if you want the substitution can be done in BOM item
