local server

Is it more advisable to have a local server rather than having your main database server situated in another country? We're using nav3.7 and our main dbserver is in singapore and its our current set-up now. We access it via citrix metaframe.

For speed, it is always better to have it localy. Even with Citrix, the data has to travel and this needs time, even with a very fast connection.
But sometimes in can be better. E.g. to centralize all DB's in one spot for maintenance (backups, fysical maintenance of the server,...).Regards,Alain Krikilion

There are license cost to consider. If you set up a local database in each country, then you must license a copy of Navision for each. You cannot just buy one license and install on several servers.
There was a multi-site license back in version 2.x, but I don't think it is available anymore.
When running Citrix/TS the data is not transmitted over the WAN. Navision runs on the Citrix/TS machine at the main site and all data processing is local. Only keyboard and screen info is sent over the wire. The bandwidth demands for a properly configured Citrix/TS environment are minimal. I have run a system with 30 users over a 256 KB line. There are no bugs - only undocumented features.0 -
You need only good bandwidth for printing, you need to transfer whole print job to print on your local printer... :-)0
