Sales Order Item Assembly BOM

I've set up a simple BOM containing 2 items. When I add the parent item to a Sales Order, I'm not able to explode the BOM. It always reserves the entry and then gives an error saying you can't explode the BOM if the item is reserved. If I set the Reserve status to Never it's automatically changing it to Optional and then reserving the entry. Anyone able to explode the BOM without changing the Reserve status? All items and Customers were set to Never as well and that didn't work. There is code in Table 904 that changes the Reserve status to Optional.
