Developers: Looking for advice

Thought this might turn into a really interesting thread. Here's my question:
If someone who is relatively tech-savvy, but has no formal development experience, wanted to get into NAV development, what would you recommend they do for 1st/2nd/3rd steps? I have my own ideas, but I'm not a developer, so I'm interested to hear what the pros think.
Any ideas are welcome and appreciated!

I can only tell you the way I did it, it worked out ok.
step 1: training. There are training sessions for NAV development.
step 2: learn about it from internet/ pdf documents
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/dynamicsnav-2009/dd338869(v=nav.60)
Introduction to C/AL

Programming in C/AL

10 years ago MS had exams for Introduction to C/AL and Programming in C/AL (advanced)
I studied the above documentation (or documentation especially written for those exams)
Maybe the exams are still there, and updated for AL. But I have no knowledge of that.
After that there is only
step 3:
Just go for it!
Try to get experience developing inhouse at a customer that does business that you are familiar with from previous occupations. This helps

Y'all are awesome, thank you. Because she doesn't have formal development training I'm going to get her going on SQL in Khan Academy just to learn some basics. It's a relational database, so she'll just need to learn new syntax (mostly) for AL."OMG ALL MY DATA IS GONE"

Go through this:
Programming Microsoft Dynamics NAV0 -
I wouldn't call myself a pro but I'm getting better every day. I started as an end user and became familiar with the database after starting to report against (SSRS) Eventually was given smaller tasks to modify reports in Nav 2016 and small code changes. Learned to debug and after a while I started writing my own codeunits.0
