NAV Report Question

In a report that has DataItem called Customer and Record Variable called CustomerRec.. Please what is the difference between the data item and the record variable.. To me, I am new to NAV development, I need to know why making use of two tables that are the same one as Data item and the other is a record variable.

Below are few high level differences. Please check.

DataItem:

Can apply required Key, Sorting Order, Filters using Data Item properties
Can write code in default triggers of data item like OnPreDataItem, OnAfterGetRecord, OnPostDataItem

Record Variable:

Can apply required Key, Sorting Order, Filters through code
No default triggers, need to apply code based on requirements

I think it is lil bit easy to perform task on a single record with Less code with using of DataItem..With Record variable you need to write more code eg(For filtering data,sorting data etc).
