How unsupported is COM/OCX/Automation in NAV2013?

I am getting confused - I have thought these are totally unsupported because now we must use .NET but apparently Automation variables are still there. So apparently not everything needs to be thrown out at upgrade.,,
So...
Using Automation with ADO, 'Microsoft ActiveX Data Objects 2.8 Library'.Connection to import data from external databases, which was an excellent thing in Classic, or maybe reverting to the old Excel Buffer if we like that more, is this still possible or not?
What exactly was taken away because apparently not all Automation?

You can run client side automation

Also note that the withevents property is no longer supported so you cannot have callbacks from your automation server in 20130
