License question: Option "License per database"

Hello there,

For a bigger project with NAV installations in about 20 countries we currently evaluate the best combination between licenses, databases and servers. One idea was to run one instance of SQL server with different NAV databases (one database per codepage or timezone). Then we wanted to use on NAV license and disable to option "license per database". This would help us to save on concurrent users because of the different timezones.

But now I heard from Microsoft saying, that this is not possible. Is that true? If yes, what is the purpose of this license per database option and the related Granule 2020 if it is the only option? That would mean, that the only way to save on concurrent users is to implement everything in one NAV database?

    One license per database are the terms outlined by Microsoft. If you want to save on servers and hardware, then you can get the one license per database granule. But you cannot run 20 databases on a single license.

    If that was permitted you would have the option of having 20 database, each with their own special customizations and setups. That would be directly opposite of Microsoft's policy of paying for new objects. You would be able to buy 10 tables, but essentially have 200. It just wouldn't make sense.

    The "license per database" is intended for hosting (ASP) companies.
    There are no bugs - only undocumented features.
