Applying Payment Problem

We are having problems applying payments, when we try and post the payment application we are getting an error saying "Another user has modified the record for this vendor ledger entry after you retrieved it from the database."
This is happening every time we try and post a payment application.
Can anyone give any information as to why this is happening and how it can be fixed?
