Is it possible to call the report source directly from a web application? Then I keep the interactive report.

Otherwise I have to return a base64encoded string of pdf or xls from the web service.

No you cannot, you have to use saveasPDF or xls. Save it in a directory and display that file. There was a blog recently about it. I can't find it right now.
