Microsoft Dynamics NAV 5.0 SP1 Compatibility with Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and Microsoft Windows Server 2008

Microsoft Dynamics NAV plans to support Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and Microsoft Windows Server 2008 once they are available. To ensure compatibility, Dynamics NAV development will start testing Dynamics NAV 4.0 SP3 and Dynamics NAV 5.0 SP1 on these two server platforms at the beginning of calendar year 2008.

When the testing has been finalized, we plan to announce compatibility within three months of the release of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and Microsoft Windows Server 2008 respectively.

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and Microsoft Windows Server 2008 are not available today. Consequently, Microsoft Dynamics NAV 5.0 and earlier versions of Dynamics NAV do not support them. Therefore, we will use the time until the availability of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and Microsoft Windows Server 2008 for testing to ensure compatibility with the final versions of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and Microsoft Windows Server 2008.

Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 will support Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and Microsoft Windows Server 2008 when it becomes available. Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 is currently scheduled for release in the second half of calendar year 2008.

It's nice that they are releasing this info now.
Hopefully they do enough testing.
I did not like how it went with sql 2k5, when it was released.

And I hope they use some of it's features.
Like only indexing records with a certain value in it.
E.g. In customer ledger entries : the index "Open,Due Date" : only records that have field Open=True need to be indexed. The Open=False records are not needed with this index.

Did you know that this feature was planned in the DOS version of NAV, but never made it into the Windows version, because the performance benefit was not considered enough to justify the conversion form a prototype to a deliverable product. The higher priority was compiled objects and object caching. (I had a big fight with them on this [:)] )

Its amazing how far ahead of everyone those Danes were back then. We are talking 15 years ago. Before the majority of readers here even heard of SQL or NAV.

My guess is nothing much would change. Back in the 90s, MSFT was busy kicking the crap out of Novell in computer networking.

The following versions of Microsoft Dynamics NAV are compatible with Microsoft Windows Server 2008 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008:

Microsoft Dynamics NAV 4.0 SP3
Microsoft Dynamics NAV 5.0 SP1
Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009

Note:
Microsoft Dynamics NAV 4.0 SP3: Customers need to update their solution with Platform Update for Microsoft Dynamics NAV 4.0 SP3 KB 940718 if they wish to run on Microsoft Windows Server 2008 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008.

Microsoft Dynamics NAV 5.0 SP1: Customers who run Business Notification and/or Commerce Gateway need to update their solution with Platform Update for Microsoft Dynamics NAV 5.0 SP1 KB 956161 and update the solution with the requirements described in KB Article 956161 if they wish to run on Microsoft Windows Server 2008.

We actually have a customer running 4.0 SP3 on Windows Server 2008 now and it seems to work fine

Windows server or SQL Server?

I think there are a lot of clients runing the 4.00sp3/Win2008/SQL2k5 combination. The quesiton is more the 4.00sp3/Win2008/SQL2k8 combination.

Only Windows server 2008 with native option at the moment. We don't have any customers on SQL2008 yet
