Detecting if Navision service is running and accessible

Is there any way, without resorting to C/FRONT or ODBC to see if a db service is running?
We want to be able to detect this to see if the system should switch to backup (retail environment)

  Hi,
  
  we're running w2003 server std ed. and we use sc \\server query W1370DEVEL to check if the navision db server is running from command line.... I hope this helps
