Becoming a Navision Guru

My company's been using Navision for about a year and a half now. We've started talking about buying a Developer License so we can do more modification in house, most of which would fall to me. So, since I'm to become the Navision Guru, I had some questions ...

Is the Developer Licnese the one thing we need to be able to change anything we want in the system? I assume we'd still need to purchase additional tables, forms, reports etc. if we need more than we're currently alloted.

Does the developer license come with any kind of super-duper programming manual? I've looked through all the ones on the CD, but none of them are in-depth enough be considered a programmer's reference. If the developer license doesn't come with one, is there anywhere else we can aquire one?

I see plenty of job postings for Navision Developers ... did these guys just learn everything on their own or does Microsoft have some kind of training course?

Thanks for any help!

You could make a lot of money starting that International School of Navision Gurus ;)

The developer license gives you access to all the code, but you'd still have to have the right objects in your license.

The license does not come with any super duper programming manual. You can order the development training material from Microsoft, but expect a hefty bill for it. If you're going to buy the manual, I'd recommend also taking an instructor led class, and take plenty of real-world examples with you to illustrate the millions of questions that you have. This class is where I got my most valuable information, simply by talking to the instructor.

One very important thing.... make sure you get the training from a certified trainer, a Navision trainer that is certified to teach the development class. It's probably worth the money to take the trip to Atlanta (or wherever they are now) and take the training at the Navision office itself, if they still do this.

Other than that, make sure you visit this site regularly and post tons of questions. At some point you will start answering a few here and there and before you know it you will be teaching the rest of us your specialty.
