Use of full WMS - Directed Put Away & Pick

Has anyone had any sites that have implemented full WMS but has suppressed the directed (suggested) put away side of the equation?

Full WMS has been implemented at this particular site however for various reasons the put away is not operating optimally (mostly down to setp & config I believe). I have indicated that the put away is a suggestion and can be changed where required and standard functionality obviously allows this. The client is not wanting to introduce a culture where staff are overiding the system. Just interested to hear if anyone has had a same issue and any ways you got around it via standard or mods. I have been told you are able to de-couple this functionality in other ERP systems.
