With Dynamics NAV 2013 partners will have the opportunity to host Dynamics NAV on Azure. Hosting a service on Azure is different from implementing and supporting an on-premise solution and requires the partner to learn about new authentication methods, monitoring capabilities and administration tools. This session is mainly about the changes we have made to the product to enable the cloud scenario, but it will also cover how we see partners maintaining and updating a hosted NAV solution.

Topics will include:

First time deployment of your Dynamics NAV solution on Azure

Setting up authentication using ACS

Administration and monitoring of the Dynamics NAV Service

Automating the update of Dynamics NAV clients

Updating the Dynamics NAV service with platform and application hotfixes

Session title: Writing C/AL unit tests efficiently with help of new tools
Date: Thursday, 27 september 2012
Time: 11:30 - 13:00
Level: 300 - Advanced
Speakers: Soumya Dutta, Elly Nkya

Session description:
With volumes of code having been written in C/AL for many end users, it is important to preserve the quality of code by means of regression testing. Running unit tests before check-in is your safeguard that keeps you from breaking existing functionality. Tests coded in C/AL utilize NAV development skills and the “usual” tools (IDE, debugger etc).

By testing smaller portions of code, the unit tests are simple to write and cost-effective way to maintain. The session will provide insights into what makes unit testing different from a scenario test, its constituent components and libraries.

The platform supports the unit testing idea by providing different tools like page testability, code coverage and debugger. Usage of these tools will be covered.

Use this thread to post your questions, comments or things you would like to see in this session at the conference.

When they were first released in Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009, Web services were an exciting feature promising a lot and providing tremendous opportunities for partners, customers, and providing tons of fun for enthusiasts. Over the past four years they have grown stronger, more robust and probably more powerful than initially expected, and Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013 just keeps adding on top of all that.

This session will take a deep dive into the realm of Web services, and will present a series of not-well or not-at-all documented features, and will provide some tips & tricks that will open new horizons for developers, through topics and examples including:

Generic Web service consumers,

Cross-call state management,

NAV-to-NAV integration,

Cross-database transactional integrity,

Smart data caching,

Dynamics NAV 2013 offers a brand new design experience for building Reports. This session will give the experienced NAV developers an insight into the new features. Reports in NAV 2013 are RDLC only. The report design experience has been improved to make it easier to optimize the Dataset design for your reports.

The session will cover best practices for Application development; that developers should follow in the new development paradigm. Even though the level for the session is high, there are also important topics for everyone.

Topics will include:

DataSet designer – Columns, labels and parameters

RDLC 2008 - What is new and what has changed

DataSet optimization - For better performance and maintainability

Debugging Reports – From inside and outside NAV

UX Guidelines – Overview and examples

Functional changes – Print on server, tray Selection, column Refactoring etc.

Upgrading - From NAV 2009 RDLC into NAV 2013 reports.

After a year of philosophizing about development best practices for PRS, we have developed very concrete examples that show how certain design patterns can change and simplify your life as a developer. We will show you a few very concrete examples (from real life), talk about the business case and dive into code to explain how and why we would solve this case. We will do this by following patterns like:

Façade pattern (aka strategy pattern)

Atomic coding

Object Oriented thinking

Leveled programming

UI separation

...

In short: make software instead of solutions. The ideas are based on the experience from three companies who have implemented PRS both in projects as well as in creating new add-ons from scratch.

Use this thread to post your questions, comments or things you would like to see in this session at the conference.
